UKRI launches limited consultation on Open Access

The UK Research Funding body (UKRI) has just asked for comments on its proposed policy:

UKRI is seeking views on its proposed open access policy and related considerations via a consultation, which opens on 13 February 2020 and closes at noon on 29 May 2020.

What is UKRI consulting on?

UKRI Open Access Review consultation – this document sets out:

    • background on UKRI’s Open Access Review and the purpose of the consultation
    • UKRI’s proposed OA policy and related considerations
    • consultation questions.

How do I respond?

Responses must be submitted using the online response form. UKRI will only consider responses received through this form by noon on 29 May 2020.

However it also rules out any consideration of wider aspects saying:

Wider aspects of open research, such as open data,14 are beyond the scope of the UKRI’s review and this consultation. However, UKRI recognises the importance of open data, together with OA, for enabling open research and is working with other funding bodies and organisations to promote good practice.15 In reviewing its OA policy, UKRI seeks to ensur that links to wider open research are accounted for.

It thus deliberately ignores the openness of all the other things that need freeing: data, model code, scripts, plans etc. This is short-sighted.
